The True Summer Child

July 2, 2009

Pure season children are fabulous to analyze because the optical effects of the right and wrong colors are very pronounced. They’re also fascinating people because their character is so true to that of their seasons.

Do you doubt that body coloring is strongly linked to character? I don’t. Ever met a tortoiseshell cat?

You don’t expect a whirling dervish to come out of someone who looks like Mrs. Claus. Anne of Green Gables … less of a reach. Cruella DeVil … still less. We instinctively expect a personality and a coloring to be associated because it so often works that way.

Little girl 2.

As the seasons blend with one another, so do personality traits become more mixed and less predictable. But a True Summer child …

  1. Is gentle.
  2. Has a lot of tiny toys that they play intricate games with. As an adult, they have borders and decorations in the rooms of their house with cute little details. This is the season of miniaturization. The girls and women look great in tiny jewelry.
  3. Takes pains to get every meticulous detail of a picture right. Even a picture the size of a wall. They’ll do the job, tiny line by tiny line, till it’s done. Spend hours finding tiny snails in tidal pools. Do not need to be in constant motion.
  4. Get frustrated with others. Can get so bothered with their Winter and Spring siblings’ impracticality that they need time in their room alone to calm down. As adults, they have high expectations of what others should tolerate or how they should behave.
  5. Most likely to be a target on the bus. May also seem to be picked on by more forceful parents. Their ability to hold their ground will help them withstand.

Headphones.

  1. Stubborn as a Dachsund. Very persistent till they get it right. Learn a music piece note by note. Shoot at a net till the wrist shot is perfected.
  2. Doesn’t force her beliefs on others but don’t accept anyone else’s ideas either.  Sweet, pleasant, calm brick walls. Accepting new things can be a big hurdle.
  3. Good impulse control from an early age.  The first to learn to shake hands when introduced to someone new. The first among their peers to learn to think before they speak. Most likely to be wealthy children with self-control that extends to money. As grownups, still have a self-control that astounds.
  4. Need sunscreen or you’ll pay for it for days.
  5. Ask question after question after question. If a family rule is “No more questions after supper”, there are probably Summer children in the home.

Hmmm….I don’t know about this. Linking personality traits to coloring makes me itchy. Think about it: Most Summers are white. And not just white, but of Northern European descent. From here, it’s a tiny hop, skip, and a jump to coding personality traits by race. If Summers are “practical” and Winters are “impractical,” are we to conclude that lighter people are more practical and industrious than darker people? What a slippery slope that is. Perhaps I’m being oversensitive to this. Or perhaps I’ve just read too much about the ugliness that eugenics brought to the world in the first half of the 20th century. :-/

Well said Elisabeth: what a slippery slope that is! Character traits have nothing to do with hue and saturation in my opinion, much with genes, education and environment probably. And yet each of us is wonderfully unique.

I can accept that simplifying 12 color boxes can fit all of us all over the world, but there’s no way that can be done for characters. The complexity there is not to be simplified, otherwise we throw the child with the water.

The funny thing about it is that my kids have this coloring and the personality description fits them to a tee. You might as well be talking about them.

    Hi, everyone,

I wondered if this one might get a little heat :)

I didn’t make up the theory of colour and personality. I wish I had. I’d write a big book about it. Actually, colorists noticed these tendencies 50 years ago, probably more. But, look,
    - 80% of the people in the world are a season blend and so a personality blend; an unpredictable and unique equation made up of 10,000 variables.
    - OF COURSE, these are averages, and IRL, there are few members of the population right on the median line; Angel’s kids may be pure Summers now, but will change with maturity, as the world influences them and as their coloring deepens (ok, ok, I’ll stop) ; if the pure average were so common, we’d use it to analyze body colouring. Same with eye patterns. Same with hair colour. We recognize that there are some shared traits, but otherwise, it’s just for a diversion. In a similar way, the same personality types are drawn to certain professions, or it creates them – without intending to reduce anyone to a set of 5 traits or less, have you met 5 surgeons?
    - why is it such a stretch to imagine that the genes that code character and body type couldn’t be on the same chromosomes? they are in animals; Chihuahuas DO have some shared personality traits, I can assure you, though there is still wide variation among individuals.

I know this is thin ice, a bit like the discussion of whether male and female brains are inherently different at birth (my position : how could they not be? they’re bathed in different chemical soups) , or whether personality is dictated by genetics or environment (my position : both; the true answer to most questions is on the middle line; or maybe, I’m just not an extremist about anything… not enough Winter in me (ha!)).

Let’s identify another slippery slope : why would anyone think that people of the same race are of similar seasons? Are all dark-skinned people Winter? Nooooo. Can you have light-skinned Winters? Sure.

I wasn’t going to put up the other True Children posts because I really don’t want to offend anyone. I tried to make it a little funny to convey that it wasn’t color gospel. Maybe it’s color porn.

But hey, I don’t mind a little heat. I’ll maybe just fix the title.

I always thank you for your thoughts and comments. I do sincerely apologize if I have oversimplified (good word, Spirilla) the infinite and fascinating complexities of human character, each of which deserves equal respect and equal voice.

The idea of personality traits matching a season is very interesting. I once read something claiming young children innately know what their best colors are but through interaction with society become drawn to other colors. As often as some of the cosmetic counter cashiers get a person wrong maybe the cashiers would do as well asking what personality traits the person has and what their favorite crayon colors were as a child.

Got something to say? I hope so.
