YES, YOU REALLY DO NEED 2 CONCEALERS. PART 2:THE DARK
November 23, 2007
After reading the article on light concealers, you’ll recall why concealer becomes more beneficial as you get older. The lighter concelear is used in shadowed areas. It also brings forward certain areas of the face which helps accentuate the bone structure.
Why you need a skin-tone concealer
The darker concealer should be an exact match to the color of the skin, or the foundation (which in itself should be an exact skin match). It goes on any area to which you would like to draw less attention, meaning imperfections, but not areas that are naturally shadowed.
Using your lighter concealer on veins or sunspots will make these areas stand out, which is not the desired result. You want them to disappear imperceptibly into rest of the face with the same color as the cheeks or chin.
Why isn’t this marketing automatic?
The darker concealer should be exactly the same color as your foundation, but of a more pigmented and drier consistency. I wish companies would just make a concealer like this automatically with their foundations. It would save women so much time. Package them together. It seems like an obvious cosmetics marketing decision to me. Who wouldn’t buy this?
Blending my own concealer? NOT.
What I never buy is those sets where you have 2 colors and you have to blend them in some proportion to get your exact skin color. Who has time for this stuff?
Buying 2 concealers will be a stretch for many, let alone thinking we’re going to mix them. This is one of those times that you stand at the counter listening to the woman tell you how easy and customized this is, and you feel yourself wanting to believe it. Meanwhile, every fiber of your being is screaming at you to stop kidding yourself that you’re really going to do this for more than a week.
Where the darker concealer goes
Simple. On imperfections, as I described earlier. If the color match is exact, you can put on a fairly heavy layer. I paint it on with a little brush so I can get it exactly where I want it. Tap your finger up and down so the edges blend without moving the product around. With powder over top, it will be invisible.
Custom-blended foundation
Here’s one big advantage of having your foundation custom-blended. The makeup artist probably has some products that can make a product thicker or more sheer. Ask her to take some of the foundation she just made for you, and thicken it to a paste. If you leave the container open for a few days, it will dry and get even thicker and easier to work with.
If you are fortunate enough to live in Charlottetown, PEI, or will visit the Island, make an appointment with Jenepher Reynolds at The Cocoon. This is where I buy my foundation. The product is so good, and Jenepher is so brilliant at mixing pigments to be a dead-ringer match, that I’m going to be writing an article about this in the near future.
With store-bought foundation
Pour a tablespoon of it into a small container and leave it open for a week or two. It will thicken, just like the product does around the neck of the bottle or in the cap. Eventually, you’ll have a very usable skin-tone concealer with a perfect skin tone match.
