The Best Gloss To Soften Your Bright Lipsticks

July 11, 2008

I have accumulated way too much lipstick over the years. Much of this is due to my ongoing search for the perfect neutral. A color that looked good at the store somehow always looks too strong at 9AM, or when I see myself in pictures. The basic color might be quite good, but I wish it were softer and more sheer.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss in Toast To Shine is the perfect lipgloss to achieve that. It works over any lipstick, whether it has pink, peach, or brown tendencies.

The color (not in the tube above) is a pale beige, a light caramel, just a little more peach than champagne, neither orange nor pink. It’s just opaque enough to change the lipstick for the better. It is a little sparkly, but not so you’d notice. It just makes every lipstick better. What I really want you to notice is that it’s the color of skin! Isn’t that great? How versatile is that?

Go see this product page at the Revlon site and scroll down below the product to see the great color swatches and preview capability. I was in and out of there in 2 minutes, had what I wanted, and was better informed. Now this is a usable website!

On a lip color that’s too dark or dramatic, it tones it down a notch. Over a lipstick that’s a little dry in texture, a touch of gloss makes the lipstick more emollient without changing the color too much. It’s all in the proportion of lipstick vs. lipgloss that you apply.

On its own, it works well on fair coloring. On deeper skin tones, a heavy coating is too light, like shiny concealer. Very pale lips may work in magazines but can look strange on real women.

On a person with lighter coloring, it could be a great nude. It’s sheer enough that some lip color will show through.

I often wear lipliner with gloss, and skip the lipstick. The liner color will also show through a little so this gloss is a great way to use up your too-intense lip liners too.

The sparkle is ok because the product is pale and the shiny particles are finely ground.

Its texture is good. The lasting power is medium to good, and better over a liner or lipstick that stays on for a long time.

The product color is shown above.

The other product shown is the runner-up in this contest for being flattering to many types of coloring, not too strongly pigmented, and great at compensating for a too bright lipstick or lipliner. It’s MAC LustreGlass in Instant Gold. The gold pigment is not strong and there is some pink in it. It would harmonize well on pinker skin. Like the Revlon, it is probably too light to wear on its own, depending on your preference.
