THIS MONTH IN DISCOVERY GIRLS : DARE YOURSELF TO FAIL

April 4, 2008

Embarking on the unknown road that will lead to success is not daunting. Not knowing what form that success might take is not demoralizing either. The real fear, the only fear, for me, lies in the event that I will walk this road to find that it leads nowhere.
Part of me fundamentally believes that that is not possible. My other part, hopefully a smaller size than the first, is not so sure. Though my intention is to shape my own future, rather than just react to the things that might happen to me, I’m not always operating at full intentional power.

THIS IS NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR

March 18, 2008

My salvation as a wife and mother of young children depended on talking with other women. That was how I knew that everyone’s life, house, and marriage were the same as mine. We shared survival strategies.

We had a laugh about the day we came out of the bathroom to find every sock in the house in use as a Barbie sleeping bag. We shed tears for one another, when we remembered what getting up every single hour for 2 days does to your spirit. We could relive the trauma of childbirth and child-raising, healing ourselves with an audience that cared. We did what women do. We processed thoughts by conversation and learned to be mothers.

IS THIS THE PERFECT HOUSE DESIGN?

March 14, 2008

I am inspired by the Japanese style of a central courtyard, with the rooms of the house all around.
I don’t want a big house. I wouldn’t want to heat it, cool it, clean it, or pay the mortgage for it.

I would have a central kitchen with a big sitting area. There is no formal living room or dining room. There is no formal anything. I do not place great faith in the ethical behaviour of corporations left to their own devices. There are some that I trust more than others, companies like Dove, Paula’s Choice, Aveda, or Title Nine. They stand out as doing the right thing either for the environment, or consumers or both.
Can you think of any [...]

Possibility is infinite
Children arrive into a world without limits, so strong is the vision they hold of what they want or need. From the very beginning when their needs were fundamental, they have lived by the credo ‘ask and you will receive’. This result is so consistent that it defines [...]

HOW TO MAKE TIME

November 2, 2007

Consider this : what standard have YOU set for yourself? It may be too high.
Women are trying to meet an impossibly high standard but this is not news to anybody. We carry around a constant burden of never meeting anyone’s expectations – not our spouse’s, not our employer’s, not the kids’, not even the [...]
