Mid-Summer Bronzers For Light To Medium Skin

July 13, 2008

Back in June, I posted an article featuring 2 Beautiful Bronzers For Early Summer. They are just as gorgeous now as they were then, but many of us have a little more color in our skin now. We’ve been wearing brighter colored clothes. We’re staying up later in the evenings and enjoying the deeper saturated colors of mid and late summer.

Bronzer for fair pink skin

It can be a trial to find a suitable bronzer for very light skin, particularly if your undertones are pink or blue (a Summer). A natural tan is always a little golden on everyone. Still, most bronzers on the market are too deep, too yellow, or worse, too peach/orange or red/brown for this type of coloring.

Beige face powder in a color 2-3 shades deeper than a perfect match, will give a light Summer woman the most natural effect. The Paula’s Choice powder in Flaxen is shown above to illustrate how much softer a face powder is than a true bronzer. The color is more beige, with just a little gold added. This is a great color in a powder that has an SPF 15 bonus.

Lancome Photogenic and MAC Select Sheer, make pressed powders in beautiful true-skin colors across the entire range of shades. Look for a true beige. If it seems too peachy or cinnamon to you, it probably is.

With a little rose blush on the apples of the cheeks, women with fair pink skin can achieve a wearable tan without seeming overdone or clashing too much with the skin on the neck and arms.

Bronzer for light skin tones

We’re looking for a product that’s fairly light, fairly sheer, and more gold than brown. Paula’s Choice Healthy Finish Pressed Powder SPF 15 in Healthy Tan is still hard to beat. You can see it in the pictures above, and below, and in the previous article on bronzer mentioned at the beginning of this article.

Another excellent one worth looking at is Cover f/x Bronzer f/x in Gold. The color looks a little red on the white background but not on the skin. On skin, it is a peachy brown, quite believable. It glistens a little in the pan but it’s not too appreciable on the face. As with all bronzer, a delicate application of a delicate color is the key.

I hope you can see this in the picture below. I’ve put in a L’Oreal Glam Bronze product just for comparison purposes so you can the variation in shades these products come in. The L’Oreal is orangey and goes on strong.

I also included another beautiful bronzer from the AboutFace collection. My favorite makeup artist, Jenepher Reynolds (if you do a Search This Site for her name, you’ll see other articles that mention her work) introduced me to the whole line. This is one gorgeous bronzer, much like the Cover f/x but very slightly more peach and less brown, a great one for women of warm coloring (Springs and Autumns).

Benefit Hoola is the one. No sparkles. No orange. No reddish brown. Good color balance and pigment intensity.

Guidelines for every face

Less-is-more is the way to use bronzer. This product builds up fast and can have you looking orange in no time.

Again, beware too much peach or orange. This effect gets amplified when applied all over the face, especially with products that deposit a lot of pigment quickly.  A woman with deeper skin coloring, like JLo for instance, might be able to wear these products well but for the fair- skinned among us, golden beige seems to be the most believable and attractive.

Stay away from shimmer. You can add it back in later where it’s flattering rather than all over the face. (see the article 6 Makeup Shimmer Do’s)

How to apply

A light dusting is plenty. The usual advice of “apply where the sun strikes” is about right. Actually, I like to put it around the outside of my face. Diffuse it across your cheekbones and the bridge of your nose, but not near the tip or you may look sunburned. Apply a little to your chin. It can even be dusted gently on your eyelids instead of eyeshadow to define your eyes a little. What’s left on the brush can be gently buffed over the rest of the face just to blend the edges

More importantly, don’t stop in front of your ears, at your jawline, or at the sides or base of your neck, or the division line will be obvious. A very light touch all over that fades over those areas is better. Apply a little over your ears, along the sides of the neck, and on the upper chest area.

The final step

You need blush. Otherwise, the look is flat and one -dimensional. Choose a pink-rose to pink-plum for the cool skin tones, and a peach-pink for the warm tones. For a very natural look, Jenepher suggested applying it fairly high on the cheeks and closer to the middle of your face than if you were using blush alone. Don’t sweep it out to the temple. Instead, you’re coming more towards the center, almost beneath the center of the eye on the top of the cheekbone.

Isn’t summer the absolute best?

Does Nars multiple in Tuomota work for Light Springs? TY

I’ll have to look, Kathleen, but it will be awhile before I get to a NARS counter again. I don’t do it off websites because I’ve been off once or twice, and I hate to think you spent all that $ to get something less than perfect.
