MAGAZINE WOMEN ARE PRETEND

I was emailed this photo :

This is a real photo based on white shark studies from Africa, from the site of Thomas Peschak .

Don’t believe it’s real? Always look at Snopes because it’s a great one to know when an email legend comes your way. For instance, they identify this picture as fake :

It got me thinking about what computers can do.

See the dragon

They can make pictures out of nothing :

I can’t reproduce the pictures from this site for copyright reasons but go visit Vlad Studio to see the remarkable work of Russian artist Vlad Gerasimov. His wallpapers are beautiful and very imaginative. Type free in the Search at bottom to see what’s available. There is a limit to how many free you can download without being a registered user, but check the site often. He often has good sales.

The dragon wallpaper is an example of a computer’s ability to make an incredible picture out of nothing. It builds it up in layers. Scroll through this tutorial for making the dragon . The artist’s mind must be so organized with a clear vision of the end result, like with watercolors.

Photoshop

The tool is called Photoshop. It’s an image processing piece of software from Adobe. There are many online tutorials to learn to use it, but oh boy, would it be worth it.

It can work wonders with faces too.

Have you seen this Dove ad?

I feel this hasn’t made the point strongly enough. See, in much more detail, what Photoshop is capable of. Take an eyeful.

The video was created by Aneliya, a 23yr old web designer from Bulgaria . ( Note : you may not wish to open this page with children standing beside you or you’ll have some explaining to do). Aneliya has an online business in photo retouching and she is good at it. Have a look at her portfolio.

Created by imagination, not reality

You know the women in magazines, right?

They get a new wardrobe every time the seasons change.

They buy $700 jeans, give me a break.
Their purse costs as much as their shoes and they have at least 20 of each.

They buy clothes for children that cost $250. They buy gifts costing more than that. They inhabit a parallel universe to mine.

Let’s get real here.

After you see what a computer can do…well, we have no clue what these women really look like until some tabloid does a feature called “How The Stars Look Without Makeup” and we all feel a little better. They look like us.

Look at this Allure cover of Mariah Carey – she looks made of wax!!

Plastic faces have no strength

We’re so used to seeing their plastic faces that we expect this degree of flawlessness, but are quite jaded to it at the same time. And still, this is the standard we set for ourselves. At least Barbie has 3 dimensions, not that she has much depth.

Let’s stop holding ourselves up against something that doesn’t even exist. No real people anywhere really look like this. In all their perfection, where did their humanity go? It ain’t in these pictures.

It wasn’t really the point of your post, but I just gotta say that Vlad is an awesome designer. I sought out special permission to use his wallpapers in the header of my site, actually. His work never ceases to amaze! :-D

    Hi, Rick,
Always good to hear from you. So true about Vlad. I am really awed by his creativity. His clocks are genius.
You know, he also illustrates what I love so much about the Internet. So many of us are working away in our corner of the globe, making it up as we go along, all isolated but connected at the same time. It’s so cool.

Got something to say? I hope so.
