Creativity And The Meaning Of Mind-Body Exercise

February 10, 2010

I hurt my knee 2 weeks ago. I do bike sprints to get cardio. You have to pant and you have to sweat every day. The knee is better but it will be the bike for awhile.

Since I’m forced to do something essentially boring, I’ve had time to ponder why so many more good ideas come to me on the bike than when I’m having a hot bath. Same thing with driving-or anytime that I am not free to write. I believe that my left brain feels busy and important, or thinks it is, so the other side is free to wander.  The usual message from  the dominant, analytical, pessimistic left is “That will never work”.  When that side is busy, it loosens the clamps on the right, which it must perceive to be silly. So I’ll keep biking, but I have to do something else sometimes.

You have your Creator picture and I have mine. Mine looks something like this.

Bad events must be the signal to switch gears. The more horrible the event, the louder the Creator is singing the MAKE A MOVE song. The Universe is trying to tell you or show you something. These are the times when I try to make decisions I would never normally make. From the article about Jennifer Kries Life Force Power DVDs (AGT article The DVD I Use To Heal), you know I’m really taken by this program. I’m in no hurry about the knee and feeling very receptive to any direction.

I felt I should explore that a little further. Yoga often feels too static, but Cardiyoga isn’t out there. I watched the Flow Yoga  selection video clips at Collage Video. It spoke to me. Flow Yoga looks like where many of the movements from Pilates and jazz came from.

At first, the workout looks absolutely like a trance, like you’re having altogether too much fun by yourself. Nevermind, I said that I was committed to change and going somewhere new.

We hear a lot about “mind-body” exercise but I never really see it described as more than “consciousness about the movement”. My Deeper Self always looks for the connection that makes my children think I’m odd, and I cannot disappoint them. I see it like this. Since there is no distinction between your mind and your body, which I wholeheartedly adhere to, when one goes one way, the other has to follow. If they are united without barriers, if they are “one”, then whatever is happening in your mind mirrors to the molecule what is happening in your body, and vice versa. When the barriers in front of one are removed, so do they dissolve for the other.

Exercise shifts the control over to my body. If you’re read the Esther and Jerry Hicks books, there your control is over the mind, and the calming of the body follows. This is the reverse. The body settles in and the mind starts to realize it feels good. I ordered Shiva Rea’s Fluid Power Vinyasa Flow Yoga. When you watch the clip, you might think “I don’t think I have enough internal endorphins enjoy that like she does”. Neither do I, trust me. My kids would tell you that I have almost none. To get somewhere new, you have to move your feet that way.

The program is kind of fabulous. Do I chant? Only in my head. For now. There are 213 minutes, divided into about 30 or 40 short sections that you mix and  match, or play pre-set 30-100 minutes sequences. As Shiva says, it’s like “land swimming”. After 20 minutes, my concentration is all over the place. But for those 20 minutes, I go to places I have never been. It is a heck of an eye-opener. And, may I say that I’m very proud of myself for making this choice.

Having been raised in Prince Edward Island, where a large part of my soul resides, where I am truly at peace, my connection to any ocean is very strong. Is it coincidence that the rhythm of the waves and of our breathing is so similar? I think not.  Nature conserves energy, so when she finds a pattern, structure, or beat that works, she uses it at every level.

These programs are about teaching your mind to feel (instead of your body) through the metaphor of reaching for the tidal rhythm of the ocean, “the one breath that unites us all”. The visualization metaphors, what women were made for, are wonderful and very fresh – at least to me, who doesn’t know Yoga jargon. Shiva’s voice and the production quality are hypnotic. Shiva sways naturally when she talks. The movements are so graceful and rock gently back and forth with each breath.

This DVD keeps the left mind busy and takes you outside your preconceptions all at once. We really are all connected, to each other, to every molecule on this planet by very real beams of energy that we can barely understand. Though still in its infancy, the internet is the best visualization of that reality. The ocean and the star-filled sky simulate the same vision of humanity as one being with one collective mind.

Look at the borders of your comfort zone. Make a conscious decision to go outside them. It won’t happen by itself. Imagination and possibility await in a no-limits Universe.

With respect and with thanks to the Universe, and to you for your place in it.

Leaving your mind behind is fun sometimes. It clears the head wonderfully. Clearing the skin is much easier to do. It’s automatic when you wear the right colours. It’s harder to explain. At 12Blueprints, a video so you can watch it happen in Clearing Skin With Colour Analysis.

    Hi Christine,

um, so this comment is not really related to this post…we talked a while back in that “Clear Winter” post but I didn’t know if you get comments automatically or if you have to check your older posts manually (and if you do so).

Anyway, err, this is probably lame, but I’m so excited to report that, as a warm spring, I managed to find an evening gown in the right red! I’ve wanted a red gown for ages but I have barely any red in my wardrobe anyway because coral or poppy red are so hard to find…usually it’s always something with blue in the shops or something very dark that often comes in heavy fabrics.

But! Now I’ve found a satin gown in poppy – I’m beside myself and wanted to show you:

I hope it comes across on your monitor…many monitors show things in a blue-ish way too, LOL. But it’s perfect in reality – I’m really happy! :-D

    Hi,

I have several of Shiva Rea’s yoga dvds, although the only one I can claim to use regularly is the beginners one. They are so beautiful, visually, aurally and… internally. I can happily sit down and watch them for entertainment. The Heart video (I forget its proper title) is amazing.

What is also amazing is that this woman, in her 40s, had a baby (making a dvd on yoga for pregnancy during the process), and is now back making more dvds – visual proof that yoga has the most amazing effects on the body. How many mothers with small children have the strength, flexibility, discipline and stamina to do these postures? And time. Time is a huge factor. How many mothers of small children have any time to do anything but look after their kids? Absolutely inspiring.

    SBunny,

I can see it perfectly! The colour is stunningly beautiful. It’s a perfect golden strawberry red.

I have been looking for makeup in clear colours lately for a Bright Spring, and it is very uncommon. Even more uncommon to find truly pure pigments in clothing. One thing I did notice though, is that because it is rare, if your eye knows how to pick out a clear colour, the right choice will jump right out at you, in the sea of muted and darkened colour out there. Good job picking that out. Do you know what lipstick you’re wearing?

    Hi, Jo,

I agree, I can sit and watch and listen to it as entertainment. Calming, grounding, flowing, your irritations have no choice but to run downhill away from you. You breathe deeper and calmer just listening to her. Where the body goes, the mind must follow. I often put in the DVD and just let it play in the background while I work.

Christine, I love your Creator picture. It’s gorgeous and very similar to my own inner vision. I heard a great story from creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson that I’d like to share. There was a little girl who struggled with all of her subjects in school until one day her teacher noticed that she was utterly engrossed in art class. The teacher asked her what she was drawing. The child answered that it was a picture of God. The teacher said, “But nobody knows what God looks like.” The child answered, “Well, they will in a minute!” I believe we all start out with an innate ability to create that we’re wide open to as children; however, socialization/standard education can so easily beat it out of us.

Hi Christine, love this piece, always so much thought and insight. I’m not good as doing exercise as a seperate activity, but as I can’t drive due eye problems in past, I walk everywhere. Sometimes several miles to get a loaf of bread and everyday stuff, which I love. It gets me out as I work from home and it clears my mind too. I feel funny if I don’t use my legs, which I guess they were built for!
Going back to an earlier quote of yours re Deep Autumns -

“All the Autumns have great variability in their presentation, the True and Dark especially. There is the exotic group and there is the masculine/military/clean lines group, and I do not see both in the same person. Some Autumns are very layered and highly accessorized with great success, but many have too much of the practical business-like approach to want so much excess and bother”.

These were verty wise words too! You probably won’t remember, but I was having some difficulty assimalating the style counsellor idea that I should move more to the Creative type and less of the Natural. I am becoming more towards the exotic you talked about, especially after reading your piece about Deep Autumn jewellery, and going out and buying some paisley deep copper earrings with olive green stones. I feel more at home in these than silver ones now and am told they look better on me too! I can see myself in your Dad’s colouring, as you describe it, it is just me too. Isn’t life wonderful that you can learn so much at any age and still keep learning? Thanks so much for all your advise and writing which is wonderfully thought provoking to us all.

Got something to say? I hope so.
