Choosing A Business Name

May 27, 2009

It feels very cleansing to get rid of half the stuff you own but you need a good reason to get to it.  The Color Analysis studio is taking shape. It needs a name.

Have you ever tried to name a business? or a website? Essentially the same thing nowadays. It ain’t easy.

So I started with

Color Compass or Clock CA (Color Analysis) – because the color wheel is a circle, and the hands point to a position. But too navigational.

Stopwatch CA , also a clock, but with a “lock-and-load”, “you’ve arrived” connotation; this might be better for a line of anti-aging gimmicks creams.

Color Path CA - it’s a journey of self-discovery… yadayada, what isn’t?

ColorWorks CA – here is where I realize that the word “color” is being repeated too much.

Fish.

There’s way more. It makes my head swirl.

EnergyWorks CA  - that’s a yoga studio.

Rainbow Energy CA – Can you see doves being released in the background and hear music playing?

Image Accelerated CA – hardly restful.

New Confidence CA – too generic.

Chroma CA – how many people know what Chroma means?

YDS Definition CA  - YDS is for Your Deeper Self ; first question people have is, of course, what the heck is YDS? or did you say YSD? is it all one word?

Precision CA – sounds like a tire balancing service but I liked the sciency- ness which appeals to my analytical nature.

Perfect By Nature CA – because you are; that’s the whole point. But it sounds like a line of organic yogurt.

Organic CA – to convey the innate, unadorned truth of the colors you were born with, but all I can picture is yogurt.

Natural Selection CA – like, what has Darwin got to go with this?

Exclusively You CA – a dress boutique, a rather standard and expensive one at that.

Imagine CA – my daughter’s favorite, after Tie-Dye CA. Why, yes, she is very creative, now that you ask. For those who know me, why, right again, it is the middle child.

Imagine Perfect CA – insert here sound of celestial voices raised in song to convey excessive New Age-ness. Might as well call it “On Your Own Wings”.

Carved wood angel.

Very nice. I’m more this guy.

 Kitsch angel.

I had a Hungarian mother, see.

Picture Perfect CA – a children’s photography studio. Or maybe pets.

First Impression CA – too common.

Experiment with Success CA – better as a tagline on a business card.

Power Source CA  -  too scary.

Intentionality CA – what???

UAccelerate CA (I’ve seen Star Trek twice and am going back again and again; it has me thinking in terms of forward momentum and exploration, though I felt Command Center CA was a bit much for all of us) ( and I figured iColor was copyrighted).

Envision CA, probably my favorite; it goes with other cool words like Engadget and Encarta. And Enterprise and Energy. Is that auspicious? And Entertain. It speaks to me about imagination and possibility, 2 things I like a lot.

Enlighten CA (my sweet children tell me the last 2 sound like “where Jesus gets his colors done” ; they told me I might as well call it Lamb Of God CA, the little turkeys).

Into Focus CA – boring name, though that is what happens. Our eyes don’t lock onto other people’s eyes because the person is not in focus. When your colors are right, the gaze doesn’t keep wandering all around because the edges aren’t smudged anymore. People look right at you. And you look right back.

Color Specialist CA – feels too self-promoting. Maybe you have to get used to that when you run your own business.

The Colors Within CA – repeats the word color again.

Accent on Color CA –  too broad. Sounds like a Home Decor place.

Full Circle CA – from the color wheel but rather general.

Cycle of Seasons, or something about Season Flow – sounds menstrual. The tagline could be Menopause and Makeup.

The Key – to suggest unlocking. The Key sounds like a spy agency. I asked my children for another word for “unlock” and they suggested “Alohomora”, which is Harry Potter for unlock. Special.

Transformation CA – synonymous with The Biggest Loser.

Yes, I know that perfect is the sworn enemy of good and it’s not that important. If you have any inspiration here, dearest readers, please help me out.

 Computer frustration.

I’m better at taglines and slogans. I found Businesscardland, a great site where you can print your own business cards. I can use a different color combination and tagline with every run.

End the uncertainty.

Stop wondering.

Imagine knowing for sure.

Imagine 60 Perfect  Colors.

I think you came up with your solution at the end. Why not call it “Perfect Colors?” Unless that’s already taken!

  2. Sonja on May 28th, 2009 2:04 am

Xavier says ” Colorama Mama”. We are laughing right now. Too funny.

No, seriously, we like Perfect Colors or Colorworks.

Love your articles so much that I’m saving up a ticket to fly to Canada and get my colors done.

My vote for the new name – and you were soooo close – ImageWorks CA

  4. Holly Grasse on May 28th, 2009 6:02 am

hmm, My Dad is perfect at coming up with names. He would be a good one to ask – around the kitchen table this summer.
Seriously make it one word. But be specific, don’t use energy or organic as it implies other things to me.And nothing that could imply great insight in to anything like insight.
    I like Envision.
    Your CA,
    CA Clarification
    CA Clearly
CA Confidence – I like this and you had picked it as well, but had it as New Confidence. or Confident CA.

I’ll think about taglines. ‘be confident with your colours”

    Hi, everyone,

I liked ImageWorks too, Dawn, but it’s the name of a film production company – the one that produced Star Trek, which was the origin of the ColorWorks idea.
You’ll be most welcome here to gave your colors done. There are now 3 women in Iowa who would like to be analyzed and 1 in Florida. I’m picturing an RV with a color room that slides out. We can pick you up in Orlando and drop you off in Nashville. My hubby and I can spend the winter in the southern US with no fixed address.

Perfect Colors is quite perfect, only it repeats that word “color”. Perfect Colors Color Analysis seems like a mouthful but it certainly conveys the idea. I took that and thought of “Quintessence” – is that a bigger mouthful?

Envision, or I could spell it EnVision, which somehow looks prettier in print, was the choice… until Colorama Mama! Don’t stop now, Xavier, run with it!

As you said, Holly, it can’t be too general because it has to be available as a domain name and as a business name to be registered in Canada (not just Ontario), and as a trademark. I’m adding “confident with your colors” to my tagline list.

Oh boy are you coming to Florida! We have a guest room on the water and no kids!

I always like the name to identify what you are doing. I think it is easier to remember. Have you checked out the names that various other people who are doing this are using to see what you like. I like one word plus color analysis: Color Analysis Therapy, or Body and soul color analysis, Truly Yours color analysis.

Just sending my son some mango recipes for his birthday and signing myself “Mango mamma”.

Are we Canadian? Do we spell “colour” with a “u”? I got so irked by that I haven’t even had a chance to go back and re-read the column so I can be serious about this.

  8. KAT on May 28th, 2009 1:02 pm

I like names that are short and to-the-point, like Perfect Color Analysis, Specialty CA, Individualist CA, Transformation CA; I also like CA Therapy. For a tag line, I suggest Your Perfect Colors or Perfect Colors for You, or even Perfect CA. Good luck!

  9. Christine Scaman on May 28th, 2009 5:32 pm

    Rosalie,

I agree that the name should identify the nature of the work. So much is done with colored light therapy to treat various ailments that I wouldn’t want to imply that I’m in that field. Truly Yours has a very good feel to it, personal but not too intimate, with the overtone of discovering a truth. Definitely either a name (though might be taken) or a tagline.
Our family loves Florida but we’ve not been able to afford a trip in Feb./Mar. for a few years. If ever another trip comes up, I shall most certainly find a way for us to meet. Now it can be a business trip!

    Helyn,

Well, jeez, I don’t know. I though words like color and behavior were spelled as I just did. Adding a “u” is British (isn’t it? I’m rather confused now), and we don’t spell anesthesia or diarrhea as they do, so why “color”?
    I hope the irkedness passes :) .

    Kat,

I like those words. Transformation made my kids go off on a big Harry Potter tangent (we’re all re-reading the books for the July movie). I love Individualist for the everyone-is-their-own-unique-formula note, but like Enlighten, Estee Lauder has foundations by those names. Not a big deal and I doubt they own either trademark. Your comment about short words is right – I think of someone asking a friend “Where did you get your colors done?” and the answer should be easy to say and easy to spell. Individualist will join the short list. Thanks so much.

Okay, Here are some other suggestions, although I like those that have already be provided, especially EnVision:

    Charisma or Color Charisma

    The Essence of Color

    Color by Christine

    The Art of Color

Christine, I am a great fan —and I am ready for you to analyze my colors. I live near Nashville,Tn. Because of the confusion I have suffered (and so has everyone who has tried to find my colors) I like the name Confident Color Analysis. Before reading all the great comments on the word “confidence,”I was voting for your middle child”s choice…i know you will choose what is best for your company’s name. i have confidence in you! Just hurry and come to Nashville,Tn.!!

Okay think Cyndi Lauper theme music…..’True Colours’ Analysis….corny but that song just keeps going through my head every time I think of the whole deal.
    Notice I spelled it with a ‘u’?
There are some really nice remixes of this song although always have loved the original…..leave it to me to put the entire thing to music…
Whatever you choose will be memorable….like you :) xox

  13. Sonja on May 31st, 2009 10:42 pm

    How about:

EnVision a New You (Legal Name)
    Personal Color Analysis

And then, on the business cards, you don’t have to write the whole thing. Eg.:

    EnVision
    Personal Color Analysis.

I liked Rosalie’s idea; Body and Soul Color Analysis
It implies that it ‘s about more than just how you look but how you feel, as well.

  14. Christine Scaman on June 1st, 2009 10:25 am

    Hi, Karen,

Always good to hear from you. I’ve added Nashville to the list. Do you know that Darin Wright at http://www.eleablake.com is a Sci\Art trained analyst and is in Chattanooga? All the Sci\Art analysts will offer the same degree of precision. The coding system is so well thought out that it doesn’t really allow for an error to be continued. As the analysis goes along, the process almost checks itself.

I’ve had many suggestions to do with confidence – because all women feel the same way about this. Sadly, it is already registered. How do you feel about Soul Colours?

PS – I have tried to do the MyLife thing about 5 times but I still get mail telling me it hasn’t worked. Just so you know, it’s not for lack of trying.

Got something to say? I hope so.
