Anti-Aging 3 : Take Yourself Less Seriously

May 29, 2008

Your sense of humor about yourself can get awfully watered down sometimes. It’s important to always be light-hearted because otherwise your skin won’t look so good. The distraction could also result in poor color choices which we never want.

Don’t let down your guard about skin and colors. About everything else, are you even going to remember it in 2 weeks?

The worst thing about getting bogged down in grave consequence is that you totally disconnect from Your Deeper Self. It’s the first thing to go. Your personal GPS short-circuits because of the imbalance. The negative in you is gaining too much speed on the side that flows along and doesn’t plan all the time. You lose your grounding source and you find yourself behaving like someone you don’t want to be.

Reel it back in. Attract a little silliness. The best opportunities come that way.

10 Exercises in Lightening Up

1. Wear dots. – pic polkadot tanks . These come from Aeropostale. The tanks underneath did too. I think they’re just fab. They were $12 each.

The tanks are racerback. I thought of it myself! My kids layer at least 3 tops before they go out the door. I’m doing well to come up with a shirt and a coat.

I had to buy both. This one isn’t even my colors, but I refuse to care.

2. Take your kids to a movie with a name like Kung Fu Panda (in theaters June 6).
Go to the official Kung Fu Panda site . Click ENTER THE SITE (lower left). That panda is a mirror image of me kickboxing. Trailer 3 is entirely comical.

Did you catch the excellent tagline across the top?

3. Consider what the world has come to when your children are obsessed with plaid shorts. Their biggest concern is “Will we look funny all getting off the bus in plaid shorts ?”

Well, yes, you might. Dare someone to care.

But this puts my problems into perspective. Silly mortgage.

4. Take yourself to the Dairy Queen. Sit in your car with no one bugging you and savour every bit. Reflect on how life really isn’t so bad.

5. Don’t clean for a week. Post jobs that need doing on the wall with the money you’ll pay whoever does the job. They’re can choose to do them or not but usually the jobs get done. Most often it’s the free-spending child who does 90% of the jobs but that’s fine. That’s the one with the energy and the shopping enthusiasm.

I have 2 daughters. One, I have to beg to buy something. She wears the same bathing suit till it’s worn out. She has her favorite clothes that she wears over and over. The other, I have to hold back. She has clothes laid out all over the floor of her room to mix and match outfits. Her dresser and closet vomit clothing.

6. Take your kids shopping and ask them to pick out things for you. It’s amazing how apt their choices are, even for perfume. You get to see yourself through their eyes. You may have to feed and hydrate them every hour, and you’ll spend $25 at Starbucks in 1 day to fortify yourself, but it will be worth it.

You can suggest things for them, but they’ll look at you like “You didn’t really mean that for me, did you?”
You can pick out a nice striped top for yourself and they’ll say “Well, at least it’s not pants.”

You’ll need to have strength and an open-mind. Maybe everyone sees you the way they do. Consider the possibility. Ponder the implications.

7. Read the entire Confessions of a Shopaholic series. If you think they’re so frivolous, why do you have feel an ulcer brewing when Becky’s spending is totally out of hand?

They’re the best books ever. Have you seen who will be playing Becky and Luke in the Feb 09 film ?

Isla Fisher is here. Her name is said “eye-la”. I think she’ll be fine.

Hugh Dancy is here . Scroll down to see who he is involved with (or was when the photo was taken) . He’ll be just right. I myself would have chosen Colin Firth but I forget that these characters are in their mid-twenties. I’ll just pretend he’s Colin Firth.

8. Wear huge sunglasses with colored frames.

9. For one day, decide that you will not allow any thoughts of that thing you are so preoccupied with. Kick them out of your head. Check in with all that again tomorrow. It will still be there but maybe it will have been easier to live without it. Call on it when you want it, not when it wants you.

10. Eat a popsicle.
